Changing Islamic Names and it Precautions
Islam always tells us about keeping the right name for their
children. It is because when a child is named, it becomes his identity and the
society knows him from the same name. the man , for being an important part of
the society, has to have a basic and
good name for his better presence and identification in his fellowship.
The
fact that Islam tells us to keep good names of the child is because the names
always impart good or bad effects on the personality of the particular person
as he is names. The person keeps listening to is own name and Muslims being
called by Islamic names are surrounded by the aura of the name. Hence, the
names have to be appropriate for the person.
But in most cases, people can not find appropriate names and
choose wrong Muslim baby names which rather have bad effects on the child.
Prophet (peace be upon him) used to change names of the children he did not
find appropriate,
“When a man came to the Prophet (Saw) with a name he did not
like, he changed it”
So for people who
believe hat the Islamic names they have kept are not appropriate, they must be
changed at any point in their lives.
This goes for both Muslim boy names and Muslim girl names
since we know that wrong names can have bad effects. It is reported by Abu
Hurrairah that
“The name of Zainab (bintabiSalmah) was Barrah (righteous)
and it was said that the name was self praising. So the Prophet (peace be upon
him) changed it to Zainab (nice smelling and good looking tree)”.
Not only this, Prophet (peace be upon him) also changed the
name of his wife Juwariyah (little friend or wife) from the name Barrah(
Righteous) because he did not want to sound like “leaving the righteous” while
leaving he house.
